Kanban for Workflow Improvement

Kanban is based on creating visibility in one’s workflow and then managing the workflow by not allowing work to exceed certain capacity levels. Doing this allows for smooth workflow and avoids the creation of delays, which create additional work. This is a challenging and fun hands-on workshop that covers both the theory and practice of Kanban.

Recommend course:

Description

The core Kanban practices can be incorporated into an existing process fairly easily while achieving significant results. These practices include:

  • Modelling the workflow
  • Managing Work In Progress (WIP)
  • Swarming
  • Using explicit policies to accelerate learning and improve management collaboration
  • Using service level agreements

This course will prove useful to those doing Scrum or other Agile methodologies who want to make improvements to their process, and also to those not using an Agile process who would like to transition to one in a smooth way.

Outline

The course alternates between interactive presentation and simulation. It provides just enough theory to understand how to complete the next section in the simulation. The simulation is designed to be challenging, you won't always get it right or figure it out in the moment. That's where the interactive presentation comes in; you'll be reflecting on what worked, what didn't and applying those lessons to the next simulation session.

Learning Outcomes

During the workshop you will:

  • Review other development processes and identify some of their limitations
  • Experience a simulated Kanban-based project
  • Learn about the basic Kanban practices
  • Learn how to create a Kanban board and have it reflect your work methods
  • Understand the effect of delays on productivity
  • Understand why limiting work in progress is important
  • Learn why large stories can block work
