National Dog Database - Using the NDD to its full potential

Get hands-on and use realistic scenarios to explore and learn the functionality of the NDD website.

Description

The National Dog Database went live on May 1st 2006 and provides a countrywide overview of dog control in New Zealand.

It brings great benefits to the animal control industry including the ability to;

  • track classified owners and dogs
  • monitor the national infringement count of owners
  • look up out of district dog and owner details
  • locate dogs when only limited information is available;
  • and contribute accurate data to ongoing policy analysis.

Learning Outcomes

Following completion of the NDD Training Workshop students will have the confidence to utilise the NDD to its full potential as a tool for animal control and understand the administrative role needed at the local level to ensure data quality is maintained.

Outline

Using the NDD training environment (it looks just like the live NDD system but contains fictional data) the NDD training workshop will explore the following areas;

  • Background – the history of the NDD project – from 2003 to present
  • TA Extracts – how information gets from your local system to the NDD and the feedback the NDD will give you as well as the different types of files you can send
  • Searching – how to get the best out of the search screen and how to interpret the results of your search
  • The ToDo List – what are errors, warnings, information and system notifications? Detailed discussion about what you need to do with them.
  • Automated and Manual Linking – National Duplicates – comparing dogs and owners that look similar but are in different districts, and how to manually search for other duplicates.
  • Security – passwords, adding new users or expiring old accounts, as well as the owner protected status.
  • Reports – what reports you can run and how to use them in your TA. Did you know there are 18 different kinds of reports that you can generate from the NDD and that you can use some of them to compare your TA’s data to a national summary?
